NYPD Announces New Rules for Drone Operations in NYC

As of yesterday, July 21, 2023, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has rolled out a new set of regulations regarding the take-off and landing of Unmanned Aircraft (UA), including drones, within the city limits. Collaborating with the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), these rules aim to strike a balance between ensuring safety and privacy while harnessing the benefits of drone technology.

One of the key changes is the introduction of UA Take-off/Landing permits. These permits are essential for anyone planning to launch or land a drone in the city. To obtain a permit, operators must apply through the NYPD Online Services Portal at http://www.nyc.gov/dronepermits. These permits are granted in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.

Under these regulations, operators are required to apply for permits at least 30 days in advance of their intended flight. Once approved, permits will be available electronically 48 hours before the scheduled flight. It's crucial to note that all operators must be licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly UA.

When operating a drone in NYC with a permit, operators must keep their documentation handy and be ready to present it for inspection upon request by law enforcement. This documentation includes the City-issued UA Take-Off/Landing permit, proof of insurance, FAA authorization to operate the drone, and the FAA registration certificate for the drone.

The City of New York reserves the right to alter, postpone, or cancel flights as needed. Operators should regularly check the status of their permits to stay informed about any changes.

It's worth emphasizing that operating a drone without a permit, reckless drone operation, or using a drone for criminal activities may result in legal consequences, including summonses or arrests and potential seizure of the drone.

These new regulations mark a significant step forward in ensuring responsible drone operation within the city while fostering the growth of this exciting technology.
